A man has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for being a felon in possess of ammunition. According to police, the man tried to steal arrowheads from a Colorado Springs sporting goods store last year. He purchased ammunition while he was there, as well as elsewhere.

The man already has four felony convictions. One of those convictions is for felony menacing. A U.S. attorney said, “This defendant was a convicted felon many times over and was prohibited from possessing ammunition by law many times over as well.”

The man is not the only member of his family in trouble with the law, either. His mother reportedly bought a gun for her son and was found guilty of such in October. Her sentencing date is Jan. 14. She could be sentenced to a quarter-million dollar fine and 10 years in federal prison.

A special agent in charge at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said of the conviction, “Illegally providing him a firearm was both dangerous and irresponsible on his mother’s part.”

Charges for being a felon in possession of a weapon or ammunition carry stiff penalties, as seen above. The man chose to go to trial and was convicted. When it comes to such serious consequences, a plea bargain may be a choice you may want to consider. A criminal defense attorney can provide practical advice on how to proceed with your case. While the decision to accept a plea bargain is yours, an attorney can advise you on whether or not it is a good idea in your case.
