Unfortunately, there is a chance that you may encounter an aggressive driver while on the road. They may just be reckless, tailgating you or trying to get you to speed up. They may get so angry that they start making hand gestures or yelling at you out the window.

When this happens, it is important that you just do not engage with this person. Doing so can escalate the situation, which is very dangerous. It may feel like it’s wrong for them to treat you this way, and it is, but simply being in the right is not a good reason to engage with them and risk the lives of everyone in your vehicle and in the vehicles around you.

So what should you do?

In many cases, the easiest way to handle this is simply to move out of the way. Swallow your pride, move to the side of the road, and let the other person go by. Again, you shouldn’t have to do this as a driver, but it may help to keep you safe.

If they still won’t leave you alone, then you may need to stop, lock your doors, and call the police. Do not attempt to run from the driver or escape by breaking the speed limit, as this severely increases the chances of a wreck.

What if they do cause an accident?

Aggressive drivers cause car accidents every single day in the United States. Even if you do everything right, you could still be injured in the crash. If you are, then you need to know about the legal options at your disposal so that you can seek compensation for medical bills and other costs.
