The holidays are a time of joy and prosperity. During this time of the year, you may have some fun parties and festivities planned with family and friends. However, you do not want to ruin this joyous time by driving under the influence.

With Christmas and New Year’s Day right around the corner, Colorado law enforcement has plans to increase its presence. There will be more DUI patrols on Colorado roadways in the next month, so you do not want to risk a DUI charge on your record. Here are some tips for avoiding the temptation to drink and drive this holiday season.

Opt for nonalcoholic drinks

Whether you are the host of the party or simply attending, you should find drinks you enjoy that do not contain any alcohol. If you plan on hosting, then you should offer your guests virgin drinks so that they can have something to sip on without becoming drunk. If you will attend a party that will not have such drinks, then you can bring your own to enjoy.

Designate a driver who commits to avoiding alcohol

At least one person should offer to drive everyone else home. Once your group has designated a driver, though, make sure that this person intends to avoid alcohol. Studies show that a large number of designated drivers have had at least one drink before they get behind the wheel.

To make the commitment easier, the other people in the group can offer to buy the designated driver a meal or go in together to purchase a gift card.

Stay with a friend or book a hotel

When the party is nearby to hotels, you should consider booking a room for the night. You can drink to your heart’s content and then walk over to the hotel to sleep it off. You do not want to risk sleeping it off in your vehicle, as an officer could determine that you had physical control of the vehicle, and arrest you.

You could also see if one of your friends would be able to have you spend the night. Offer to pay for breakfast the next day to show your appreciation.
