A rollover crash resulted in the temporary closure of Highway 24 on a recent Sunday evening in Colorado Springs. Police claim that a man was speeding westbound along Highway 24 when he struck the back of another vehicle being driven by a woman who suffered serious injuries in the collision.

The force of the collision caused the female driver of the second car to lose control of her vehicle and drive off the road. The woman’s car struck two utility poles and flipped over onto its side. The woman could not get out of her vehicle after the crash and firefighters had to extricate her after arriving on scene. Emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Police say that the 30-year-old man who allegedly struck the back of the woman’s vehicle was at the scene of the crash when they arrived. Authorities say that they tracked him down and placed him under arrest. Police further claim that the man was intoxicated and without injuries when they found him. They arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence, reckless driving and vehicular assault. The collision resulted in approximately 200 households being left without power.

It’s important to note that we have only heard one side of this tragic story. The man who was accused of DUI and causing the accident in this case will be viewed as innocent by the court until — and only if — the prosecution proves him to be guilty of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Until that happens, he will have the ability to defend himself against the charges in criminal court.
