Speeding: A leading cause of crashes for a reason

Did you know that around a third of all crashes can be linked to speeding? This is because speeding makes it much less likely that a driver can stop or slow down fast enough if there is a hazard ahead of them.

In 2019, the National Safety Council and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that around 26% of all traffic fatalities were linked to speeding in some way. That means that around 25 people were killed each day due to speeding or a combination of speeding and other factors.

Is speeding a growing problem in the United States?

Fortunately not. Speeding has been on the decline over time. In 2010, 32% of all traffic fatalities were linked to speeding. At the last time data was collected, 26% of fatalities were linked to speeding in 2019. That is a significant drop, and it is one that has been occurring relatively consistently over time.

Who is at the highest risk of speeding?

The statistics show that it is more likely for younger drivers to speed. It was also more likely for men to speed than females across all ages. It was determined that men between the ages of 16 to 24 were the most likely to have been speeding at the time of a collision leading to a fatality.

What factors make speeding so dangerous?

There are several things that make speeding dangerous. For example, not being able to react to changes in the environment is one. Other possible factors could include:

  • Speeding on wet roads
  • Speeding on ice or frost
  • Speeding in standing or moving water
  • Speeding over gravel, dirt or mud

When put together in combination, these factors could lead to serious automobile collisions with fatal outcomes.

What should you do if you’re hit by a speeding driver?

If you are hit by a speeding driver, you do have a right to look into making a legal claim against them. Seek medical care right away, so that you can make sure that you are healthy. Then, keep that documentation, so that you can use it in your personal injury claim.
