Criminal charges related to acts of domestic violence such as domestic assault, harassment and reckless endangerment carry serious penalties for those who are ultimately convicted. In addition to spending potentially months or years behind bars, those convicted of criminal charges related to domestic violence often suffer irreparable harm to their reputations and personal and professional lives.
Serious criminal charges against former NBA guard, DeAndre Liggins were recently dropped related to an incident that occurred between Liggins and his girlfriend who is also mother to the couple’s two-year-old son. According to documents previously submitted to the court related to the August 2013 incident, Liggins reportedly grabbed, threw and hit his girlfriend.
The more serious criminal charges against Liggins were dropped in part because his girlfriend, who made the accusations, left the state and is refusing to cooperate with prosecutors. Attorneys for the prosecution do, however, plan to file misdemeanor domestic abuse charges. Speaking about the case, Liggins defense attorney cited that his client is “extremely grateful” for the outcome of the case.
In many cases involving allegations of domestic violence, those accused of committing such acts are automatically presumed to be guilty. In this case, even though the serious criminal charges against DeAndre Liggins were subsequently dropped, he will likely continue to be harmed both professionally and personally because of the serious accusations and original charges.
Individuals who are facing allegations related to domestic abuse or assault would be wise to secure legal counsel. A criminal defense attorney who handles domestic violence cases will ensure that an individual’s rights are protected and, if necessary, that a strong defense is presented.
