What One Factor Results In Most Slip-and-Fall Incidents?

A Conviction Could Cost You Your Professional License | Colorado Springs, CO

If you were to envision a situation that may result in slipping and falling at your local grocery store, you might think of wax, cleaning solvents, oils, puddled water or some other residue. These are indeed dangerous.

What’s most apt to cause a slip-and-fall incident is floor mats. There are a few different reasons why that’s the case.

What can make floor mats dangerous?

The National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) published the Standard Guide for Commercial Entrance Matting in Reducing Trips and Falls in conjunction with the American National Standards Institute. The two organizations outlined how floor mats often prevent slips and falls. They do so by tracking debris and moisture in them so that they aren’t tracked into buildings. Like most consumer products, though, not all floor mats are created equally.

Studies conducted by the two above-referenced organizations show that NFSI-endorsed floor mats with rubber backing are safest as it helps them stay in place. Their study also noted that mats should feature a 1:2 beveled edge ratio to increase their visibility. They note that these mats shouldn’t be thicker than a quarter of an inch, however, or they pose a tripping hazard.

The flooring organizations also highlighted how floor mats are most effective when placed not only at entryways but anywhere there’s a chance for water to accumulate or where there’s significant traffic. Soiled or extremely worn mats or those with curled-up edges should be discarded to protect individuals’ safety.

All property owners have a responsibility to keep their premises safe. Colorado law might allow you to pursue a civil lawsuit against a business owner whose negligence caused you to suffer an injury.
