What Are The Leading Causes Of Driver Fatigue?

What Are The Leading Causes Of Driver Fatigue? Colorado Springs, CO

Fatigued driving is a common occurrence throughout the United States, and it can be a huge problem when it involves truck drivers. In fact, driver fatigue is one of the leading causes of catastrophic trucking accidents.

Several factors contribute to driver fatigue. If you or someone you love is a victim of an accident caused by a fatigued driver, you may have legal options to explore.

So how does driver fatigue happen?

Obviously, taking to the road without adequate rest can leave you vulnerable to getting fatigued behind the wheel. Driving for extended hours without rest is another risk factor. The law limits how much truckers can drive. Unfortunately, as these limits are ample, truck drivers still find themselves fatigued, especially toward the end of their shift.

Other than inadequate rest and driving for several hours, here are other factors that can increase the odds of getting fatigued behind the wheels:

  • Illness – From common flu to serious infections, illness can leave the driver’s body craving rest. Unfortunately, a truck driver’s work schedule may not allow them to get the rest their bodies desperately deserve when they are ill, thus, increasing their likelihood of getting fatigued.
  • Use of certain medications – Certain medications tend to have a relaxing effect. Thus, using them while on the road can increase the risk of fatigue.
  • Alcohol and substance use – This is pretty straightforward. Alcohol impairs the driver’s ability to remain alert and function properly. The use of alcohol and other inebriating substances both before and while driving can greatly increase the driver’s risk of fatigue.

Driving while tired is avoidable. Find out how you can pursue damages if you are involved in an accident caused by driver fatigue.
