Being wanted for a crime in Colorado could result in an arrest in another state. What usually happens in these situations is the individual is pulled over and/or arrested for an entirely different reason, and then a background check reveals that the person has an outstanding arrest warrant in Colorado.
A case like this happened late last month. A 19-year-old man who is wanted for suspected murder in Colorado was taken into custody by authorities in southwestern Michigan. The officers who arrested the man found him during the investigation of a potential kidnapping.
The arrest happened last week in a town close to Grand Rapids at an apartment complex. State police took two men into custody on a Wednesday evening. The arrested 19-year-old man allegedly tried to give police a fake name. However, he allegedly revealed his true identity to the officers at a later time. That’s when police ran a criminal records search on the man.
The search revealed that the man was wanted on a Colorado arrest warrant for alleged murder. No details have been revealed relating to the Colorado murder case that the man is allegedly connected to. After they confirmed the individual’s identity with Colorado authorities, the state police booked him into jail.
When a wanted individual is apprehended in a state other than Colorado, he or she will usually be extradited back to Colorado. However, if the individual also faces charges in the state that arrested him, he or she may be required to complete the legal proceedings related to the other state’s charges before the extradition takes place, including serving any jail or prison time if found guilty and sentenced to incarceration.
